Morning Routine?

Hello Friends,
Today I have a really serious question for you all– almost as serious as Kendall Jenner’s big, raw, horrible secret she was embarrassed to talk about!!! No, I’m not talking about acne, I’m wondering if any of you ACTUALLY go to get your mail/paper with a cup of coffee like they always show in movies and commercials. It is not practical, as we discovered for this photoshoot! haha

What’s your morning routine?

Mine typically consists of:

  • finish feeding Wellesley,
  • wrangleWolfgang as he pulls things off of shelves and drawers,
  • try to make my hair look slightly less greasy/crazy/homeless,
  • possibly swipe on lipstick or a bit of makeup,
  • earrings or a necklace, bracelets if I’m feeling fancy
  • laundry or unloading the dishwasher during breakfast,
  • playing paw patrol pups on the floor with big W,
Look at these incredible earrings!!!!!! I love that these are now a regular in my AM routine because I can wear the same ones in a new way each day!!!

Over the Knees… and Through the Woods?

Sitting at Barnes & Noble on our “date” last week. 🙂

Halloween is almost here and before we know it, Thanksgiving, then Christmas! ‘Tis the season of fuzzy sweaters and tall boots! Stores all over are hitting us daily with ads about all of the expensive things we deserve to get ourselves, haha. So I wanted to share a money saving tip if you’re on the lookout for boots that go way up over those knobby little knees of yours! 😉

I was recently talking with a friend who complimented my over the knee (OTK) boots, and in the course of the conversation she mentioned that boots like that would be an investment. Truth is, it doesn’t have to be. I think my boots cost a whopping total of… $10. I could be wrong though– I ordered a few of these at one time and 2 pairs were like $26 and the other was $10, but either way, boots like these don’t have to cost a lot to look sophisticated!!

Here are my top boot picks under $40!

I think there’s a misconception that OTK boots are not something you can wear everyday… and that’s also not true! Scroll down to see how to style OTK boots casually, dressy, and everywhere in between!!!

ohhhh and I’ll link the post to each picture, all you have to do is click! I also added in a not so flattering pic of 7 year old me hugging boots…

Halloween Sugar Cookies for the Neighbors (Using the best recipe ever!)

halloween cookiesHi guys! I’m just over here making some yummy sugar cookies for the hood and I thought I would share the recipe because it’s legitimately the best and easiest recipe I’ve ever used!

Sugar Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups all purpose flour

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Combine soft butter and sugar in mixer until smooth
  3. Add vanilla extract and egg to the butter/sugar mixture
  4. add baking powder and salt. Mix and scrape sides of bowl with spatula to make sure it’s evenly combined.
  5. Slowly add 3 cups of flour, scraping down sides of bowl periodically to make sure it’s all combined.
  6. Remove dough from the mixer and separate it into workable sized chunks.
  7. Sprinkle flour over your clean work surface and roll out dough.
  8. Cut cookies, add to pan, and bake in the preheated oven for 6-7 minutes. They will continue baking on the pan so don’t leave them in much longer than 7 minutes!
  9. Let cool, then decorate!

Here is a link to the dough recipe… I made a few slight changes (mostly in how to combine the dry ingredients) it is so good and the shape stays well.

frosting recipe

(so basic, but works!)

  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 4 tsp of milk

  1. Mix together with a whisk and add food coloring as desired! add more milk if you want it more liquid-y and add more powdered sugar if you want it stiffer.
  2. Add food coloring as needed.
  3. For solid color areas, spoon and spread the frosting on the cookie.
  4. for details, use stiffer frosting (add more powdered sugar) and pipe the frosting onto the cookies.

This doesn’t make tons of frosting so you may need to make a few batches, which is fine especially if you will need a few different colors. I made 2 batches and turned my orange into brown for the pumpkin stem, then I used another batch and left some plain white to pipe out the skeleton, after that I added blue to do the bats, and then added yellow to my blue leftovers to make the green.

Beginner tips

make a few batches, add food coloring, and decorate quickly so the frosting doesn’t dry out
To make very basically decorated cookies a little cuter, make sure to add more than one color or add edible embellishments like the eyes I used!

I’m really excited to bring these to the neighbors with some cute cards tomorrow because we usually don’t do anything like this, but we have been learning lately how important it is to be good neighbors. Jesus even says we need to be so I guess we can’t argue with that!

for all my gingham girls

Ladies, this adorable gingham dress is $11. Need I say more?
Oh but I will say more because I have to explain a few other reasons why I love it. Like how the high-low hem is great for when you are busy running errands, chasing your kids around, or working at a job (like teaching) because it means that when you bend over, you’re still fully covered!
I also am thankful for the button-down aspect of this dress because it makes breastfeeding a breeze (ever tried nursing in a dress that isn’t button-down? Yeah, it doesn’t work). Did I mention this would be one of those good before, during, and after pregnancy dresses too? Well it’s true! I recommend wearing it with a belt or a sweater that pulls it in before and after pregnancy though because it’s so roomy.
Being only $11, you wouldn’t expect to experience the type of quality I think this dress is, but it seems to be great quality. I washed it before I wore it and it still looks great. Also, I am impressed with the button quality because they haven’t randomly come undone on me like I’ve experienced with some button-down shirts I have. So I didn’t feel like I had to wear an undershirt and shorts under it, which is kinda nice!
My belt is from a Ralph Lauren factory store we went to in the Wisconsin Dells this summer. We bought it for like $25 (I can’t remember the exact price but it was under $30). I wish beyond wish they had a website so I could direct you to because everything I find online that’s a near approximation to this belt is like $200 & up.
Don’t you absolutely love cognac leather? It’s such a warm, light, beautiful color and it’s even better when pared with gold accents like you see in the RL monogram! Cognac is definitely my favorite color of leather so because I couldn’t find my exact one, I’m linking some similarly colored options with interesting details and that aren’t more than a month’s rent in your first apartment!
Brooks Brothers $29
Express double ring belt $39
Express Western Belt $39

If you’re looking to find ways to spice up your otherwise neutral outfits, add a single pop of color! I found my purse on sale at Target a few years back and I love it because it has proven to be an inexpensive way to bring a special dose of newness and excitement to an otherwise pretty vanilla outfit.
I don’t have an exact dupe of this bag, but I did one better yet by finding you a red crossbody that’s only $9.99!
As for the boots: a very similar pair can be found here from JC Penny’s for $39!!!! I found mine at for about half that last year. I will link to a page with all of Walmart’s over the knee boot options for this season, but they have so many options, I’ll let you see for yourself! 🙂
